Rhodes Club Fitness
Rhodes Club Fitness is one-of-a-kind! Rhodes has been meeting the fitness needs of Gulf
Coast residents since 1979. It was originally founded by Joseph "Doc" Rhodes, a local,
world champion power lifter. During those years "Doc" has trained athletes, business people,
power lifters, teens and "couch potatoes". More importantly, as a Christian, Rhodes' facilities
provide a safe, family-oriented environment instead of the "meat market" atmosphere often
associated with traditional gyms.
On a visit to our Hardy Court Facility you'll find members of both sexes and all races
with ages ranging from 13 to 89. The club is over 12000 square feet allowing separate areas
for different programs. The aerobics room provides space for areobics, pilates, etc., yet, also
sees use by the cheer squad from Gulfport High School.
The main room contains cardio equipment, numerous weight machines, a juice bar, tanning room,
lounge area and is the hub for all activity. A separate, enclosed pool area is provided
and kept at constant temperature for members. Yet another area is separated for the Spa which
contains a hot tub, dry sauna and steam room.
The second largest area is the Free Weight Room, approximately 1800 square feet of space devoted
to the serious athlete or body builder. Many sanctioned power lifting events have taken place there.
wThe weights and dumbells are rubber coated to reduce noise levels while lifting.
The club provides bathrooms, showers (with FREE towels), dressing areas, hair dryers and
lockers. Housed within the club is Sam's Salon, a full service hair salon and Memorial Hospital's
Physical Therapy unit which utilizes all our equipment.
A visit to Rhodes for Women would seee a similarly diverse group of members, but, ALL FEMALE.
The facility is unique to the Southern U.S. because it provides a 100% female environment.
UNLIKE the franchised, "ladys only" clubs that rely on limited staff resources and a boring
circuit training routine constantly using the same 7-8 machines, Rhodes for Women is a full-service fitness center with an
intimate atmosphere. And, it's located adjacent to a substation of the Gulfport Police Department
which provides evening visitors with added security.
The staff is 100% female and the only male you might ever see would be "the coke guy" or
similar vendors. Maria Creel, with over 20 years in fitness centers, is the manager. Maria
is a personal trainer skilled in the special needs of females, a past championship level
competitor. Maria's club features the latest cardio equipment, flat screen TVs, aerobics,
pilates, weight machines, free weights, both a tanning bed and stand-up tanning booth,
supplements and more. Members at Rhodes for Women can actually enjoy club
membership WITH unlimited tanning for less than most local "Tanning Salons" charge for
