Heart Rate Calculator

Managing your heart rate during exercise is important. Typically cardio equipment, such as treadmills, bikes, elipticals, stair climbers, etc. provide the best opportunity for you to manage your heart rate for building stamina and/or burning calories. Below you'll find simple formulas that allow you to calculate your Maximum Heart Rate and your Target Heart Rate for upcoming exercise. NOTE: Please consult your physician before engaging in any rigorous exercise. Rhodes makes no representation that achieving your Target Heart Rate is an activity that is without risk for you.
Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) is a generic standard of safety, a number which you should not exceed. Once your MHR is determined, then you can calculate your Target Heart Rate (THR), a generic number which should be ceiling for safe exertion.

Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) = 220 Minus Your Age

Target Heart Rate (THR) = Maximum Heart Rate Times 0.75

For Example: A 40 year old's numbers would look like this:
  • MHR = 220 - 40 = 180 beats per minute
  • THR = 180 x 0.75 = 135 beats per minute
